Full Moon Party
Once upon a time in the late 1980s, someone came up with the idea of making a birthday party on the beach during the full moon. The event was so good that it was decided to be repeated next year. Since then, the event has turned into a commercial event Full moon party organized every month during the full moon. From 10,000 to 30,000 people are coming for one night, every month on a small and peaceful island Koh Phangan. Not everyone finds accommodation on the island, some stay on nearby Koh Samui and only come for this one night. In the vicinity of a full moon, all ferries are full filled
What is the party like? A wide beach emerges between the rocks and palm trees, along which the platforms for DJs. Everywhere are the people painted in fluorescent colors. You can feel at the footsteps of the feet synchronized with the bass coming out of the speakers. The moon dominates over everything and brightens. If you are a fan of EDM or psychedelic music, it is a must-visit for you.
In order to make the business not only once a month smaller festivals are also organized between full moons, such as a half-moon party (2x a month), Blackmoon Party or Jungle Experience – a jungle event. However, they are far from the popularity of the original event.
The official website of the festival where dates of next events can be found http://www.fullmoonparty-thailand.com/
Someone, once told me that on Koh Phi Phi every night beach parties take place, but they do not match the scale of this on Koh Phangan.
In addition to the usual event, the clubs organize fun and other attractions to attract as many people as possible. For example, the person who makes the most jumps on a burning rope wins the bucket of alcohol. Some are less, some more dangerous. Before participating, remember that no one here adheres to the principles of health and safety. Other drunk people participate in the game, for which you can not be sure how they will behave. I’m not saying this firmly, because everything is for people. You just have to be careful in the world.
How to get to Koh Phangan
I traveled from Bangkok. I chose flight to Surat Thani and ferry to Koh Phangan after.
Detailed plan of travel and other alternative ways you find in that post about Koh Phangan
How to get to Full Moon Party
Fullmoon party takes place on the Haad Rin beach in the eastern part of the island. To get there, you have to catch the Songthaew (pick-up bus). It costs 100THB or 150THB if we are going from a less popular part of the island. Such buses on the night of the festival run all the time in two directions, bringing people to the beaches and then taking them back.
Entry to the site costs 100THB. The festival includes Haad Rin beach and adjacent streets with shops and hostels. If you live in this place or you are on the beach before sunset, you will be checked in for tickets and you will not want to go outside, you can skip the payment.
Between Koh Phangan and Koh Samui also motorboats are sailing, which bring people who did not decide to stay on Koh Phan gan or simply was not enough accommodation for them.
Drinks and Food
You can buy traditional Buckets on the beach. It is a bucket for the sandbox, filled with ice, with 200ml of alcohol (to choose Rum, Vodka, and others) and soda (Cola, energetic etc.). The price of the bucket is from 200 THB to 500THB. The price increases as you approach the beach.
People who are hungry have a choice of a lot of grilled dishes, or pieces of pizzas.
In the area covered by the festival, you will also find 7-eleven stores, where you can buy a cheaper beer.
Tips & Tricks
In the middle of the night I do not recommend swimming in the ocean, for 2 reasons: First: Entering the water after alcohol is extremely dangerous. Secondly, a lot of people use the beach like the toilet.
I also do not recommend walking barefoot on the beach, you can find broken bottles.
Do not take with you a lot of cash and documents, in such a crowd it is very easy to be robbed or simply lost.
Colorful Fluorescent clothes can be found anywhere on the island. The closer to Haad rin, the prices are higher.
People who live in the surrounding beaches can use the boats that take people from the beach.
